Well, today I tried to install some old IDE hard drive to install XP and try some stuff and it's working, in fact I'm on it right now, but that's only because my SATA hard drive decided to stop working after a reboot, stupid hard drive.
I was installing xp and after a while it rebooted as usual, but then I got a surprise, the bios would always stop on post after identifying the sata hard drive.
The bios shows the name, model, etc, of my sata hard drive but then it just hangs in there, if I unplug the sata cable and reboot it all goes well but if I try to plug it again it starts to happen again. I think the hard drive is failing but S.M.A.R.T says it's all ok... My sweet hard drive
I tried another sata drive that I put aside because it started to fail and windows/smart was complaining about it and it boots normally.
I've switched jumpers from the IDE drive, unplugged cables, replugged cables resetted the bios by removing the battery from the board, re-flashed my bios, all to no avail... I can't believe all my data is lost
So there will be no tf2 for me for a few days until I buy a new drive, probably a WD 500 GB black edition, because now I'm stuck with a 10 GB drive. :x

Hmm, tried installing SATA drivers to your XP installation?
I think that in some cases (harddrives) you need drivers to get them to work. My Western Digital harddrives were a bitch to install Windows Vista on because first I had to find drivers for them.

Yeah Draken. As abbe said, SATA drivers are NOT included in Windows XP, so if you're trying to do or done a clean install, your SATA drive will most likely be not recognized. Try to create an XP installer disk with nLite or such with implemented SATA drivers, just google it for howtos. Or, if you happen to have a floppy drive, you can also put those drivers on a floppy disk and browse and implement them during a regular XP install.

Oh yeah... That's a problem.
Ummm, if you dare:
Disconnect your HD during the startup and then connect it right after the boot, then see if windows can see it (make sure SATA drivers are installed).
Sata discs have the ability to act as USB connections I believe, because I can disconnect my Sata drives in windows, if that works you can at least safecopy your more important files...
Note:
I've never tried this myself as I've never have had a reason to try it...
Also I think you need a "newer" drive (bought in the last 2-3 years...) to have the hotswap function.
