The Gpu and cpu on my lappy is right under WSAD and the HDD (passive cooling) is under the palmrest, on the left My hand sweats a lot in sumer coz of this. However the other palmrest is pretty cool. I see some sites where they have a heat map of the laptop, check that. |

| Quote: | @slate: actually, my sister owns a dell studio 15 or 17 I think (old model), and I've used it a couple of times before and I never really noticed any uncomfortable heating issues, but since everyone says that dell laptops are actually good, I might give it a try and see how they perform at the shop.
|
I'll just say here I tried TF2 on a dell studio 15 (3250/3450?) and the performance is NOT acceptable. Not sure if they updated the specs since then, but I guess any laptop with integrated graphics will not be good for TF2. The studio 15 is good apart from it is not a gaming laptop. If you want to play TF2 etc get one with a proper mini dedicated graphics.
EDIT: They have an i3 and what is described as 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD5470 Graphics Card now, no idea if that is good, best find a review of it and don't assume its the same as desktop version. |

The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 is an entry-level / lower middle class DirectX 11 graphics card for laptops. So it will run most older games from DirectX 8 or 9 really well. But newer games will be challenging.

Calin is right. Most GPU's are quite equal. However they will have some modifications. They will consume less power, and that costs some graphical power. However, most of the time the numbers are quite equal and you will be able to do the same things.

The top of the 4xxx serie wil stil be able to run some games. However, it would be a waste to buy one like that right now, the budget is good for a better card that can do more :D

I've heard that laptops have a bad over heating problems but I never guessed that it will be so bad that it will be uncomfortable for you to put your fingers on the keyboard. :/
|
This really depends on the laptop design. I had allot of head problems with my old ACER 5920G. I needed a laptop cooler to play TF2 on high settings. However with my new Sony Vaio I have never had this problem. There is a very good fan design, so i gave my laptop cooler to my girlfriend since I can game just fine without.

@Lummer: To be honest, I never looked into the Vaios because everyone says they're too expensive for what they provide, etc. But that looks good, and not too expensive, it is just in line with other laptops. But btw, what video card does your Vaio have and how much fps do you usually get in games?
|
Vaios have been overprices for a long time. Gues that was becouse of the great software sony delivers with them. I have a great update program that notifies me of new drivers and new back-up tools free from sony. I have to say: Great Service
My laptop has the following specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13 GHZ
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
4GB Memory
500 GB Harddisk
Usually i get about 50-60 fps on high settings (including Anti-Alli-lasing 8x

The video-settings that are hidden from you, cause your gpu couldn't handle them, beg to differ |

yes but it's far from being "The top of the 4xxx serie wil stil be able to run some games. However, it would be a waste to buy one like that right now"
you really don't need 8aa 16af with all ultra settings to call a game "playable" |
